The National Research Center for Pediatric Oncology and Hematology of the Ministry for the Republic of Belarus was opened in October 1997. It was the result of the cooperation between Belarusian Government and Hilfswerk Austrian Humanitarian Organization. The establishing of the pediatric oncology and hematology in our country was a long and difficult process. It started with a small 30 beds hematology department in the 1-th state clinical hospital of Minsk. Only twelve of a hundred patients who were treated for acute leukemia had a chance to survive.
There was limited number of medicines, the level of diagnostics was insufficient, and the protocols of therapy used didnt give encouraging results. In 1990, the Pediatric Center for Hematology was founded where the modern protocols were applied. However, the Pediatric Center for Hematology occupied unadapted building. The risk of complications with unsatisfactory conditions of the patients staying in hospital was very high. Till 1989 children with solid tumours were treated in adult oncology clinics. In a number of cases, the basic method of treatment was surgical and palliative radiotherapy. In 1989 on the basis of the Research Institute of Oncology and Medical Radiology pediatric department was established. The treatment of pediatric cancer has its own features because the basic treatment is chemotherapy, and taking care of a child and the observation of hygienic norms are very important. That was possible only in the modern specialized Center.
When treating childhood cancer it is important not only to define the stage of tumour process but also to refer the patient to a certain prognostic risk group. This subdivision is actual because the stratification of the patients who is in the high risk group requires the more intensive chemotherapy and the bone marrow transplantation. To define the prognostic risk group it is necessary to carry out the molecular-biological assessment. In our country, it is possible only in our Center. This study is also necessary for the control of minimal residual disease.
The results of pediatric cancer treatment in our Center are encouraging. So, ten-year event-free survival rate of the patients with acute lymphoblastic leukemia is 70%, with Hodgkins disease 80%, 5-year event-free survival rate of the patients with malignant brain tumour is 55%, with nephroblastoma 80%, with osteosarcoma 60%.
